The Sunnyside Mennonite Church family experienced an emotion-filled morning on June 29, 2008 when Pastor Ira Kurtz and Evie concluded their pastor assignment.
It all began 18 years earlier after a search committee researched, interviewed, prayed, and then asked Ira to preach a sample sermon, followed by an affirmation from the congregation to invite Ira to be our pastor. Bishop James Hess shared with the committee his personal knowledge of Ira and Evie as missionaries and assured us of his Christian character and faith. Ira was known as a diligent, intelligent person, as a praying man. Both Ira and Evie were described as effective and flexible missionaries, and kind, caring people.
Eighteen years later as the congregation was invited to reflect on their ministry among us, to say thanks, and to offer a tribute for their work, many of these same characteristic were mentioned. The Worship team selected songs to develop the theme "Celebrating Servant Leadership", before Don Jacobs presented the message. Don has known Ira and Evie very well for many years and discussed the comings and goings of their lives and ours. Psalm 121:8 was the basis of the meditation. "The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forward and for evermore." God calls us and we go from one place and come into the new place of life and service.
After a refreshment break, the congregation presented a tribute to Ira and Evie. From young to old, people told about their
experiences, expressing their love, appreciation and best wishes. Individuals and groups, with material both serious and funny, reflected on these fine years together. Evie's excellence as a story-teller and teacher was mentioned many times. Listeners young and old were captivated by her effective style and remembered the "message" long after the classes ended. Comments were made about Ira's intelligence and humility, both with the many sermons preached and the willingness to be in the dunk tank at many church picnics. His faithful support of Tuesday At The House, and encouragement of those involved with the mission programs of the church, the way he helps families in Sunnyside, his interdenominational involvement in Lancaster, his vision to deepen our faith and practice, were all mentioned.
"Passing the Mantel" involved Ira presenting several books, and a communion set to Brian Miller, Associate Pastor, as he takes the role of Lead Pastor. Ira gave his blessing to Brian and thanked him for the healthy teamwork they have experienced.
A financial gift was presented to the Kurtzes to use for a possible vacation trip. It was a way for the congregation to bless them for their many contributions.
Both Ira and Evie spoke to the congregation, thanking them for their support, patience, and friendship and for the retirement gift.
Brian reminded us that Ira taught us to physically reach out our hands as we receive the benediction. Brian gave the benediction as we concluded this meaningful, memorable morning.
